Frequently Asked Questions
What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves inserting thin, sterile needles into specific points on the body to promote healing and balance. These points, known as acupuncture points, are believed to correspond to various organs and systems in the body. Acupuncture is based on the concept of "qi" (energy flow), which is thought to move through pathways called meridians. By stimulating these points, acupuncture aims to restore the body's energy balance, alleviate pain, reduce stress, and promote overall well-being. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as chronic pain, migraines, digestive issues, anxiety, and sleep disorders.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Most people feel little to no discomfort when the acupuncture points are inserted. The needles used in acupuncture are very fine, much thinner than those used for injections or blood draws. You may feel a slight pinch or tingling sensation when the needle is inserted, followed by a feeling of warmth or pressure. These sensations are usually brief and mild. Once the needles are in place, most people find the experience very relaxing and even euphoric. Overall, acupuncture is considered a very gentle and well-received healing modality.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of acupuncture sessions will vary depending on the client. A typical wellness plan starts with weekly or twice weekly treatments for 6-12 weeks before reassessment. Treatment frequency depends on a variety of factors including the severity of the condition, health history, and the length of time the client has been experiencing symptoms. Most people experience a noticeable change and feeling of deep relaxation after the first treatment.
